about

In the fall of 2020 I took a couple of great musicians, organist Kyle Koehler and drummer Noel Sagerman into Jankland studio to record twelve of my original blues inspired jazz tunes. Noel is an old friend I’ve played many gigs with over the years and Kyle is a new friend. Twelve songs in one session is a tall order, but I knew we could pull it off.

“Prelude In Blue” opens the date, and is a question rather than an answer. It’s a mystery, a surprise and foreshadows what’s to come. The mood Kyle and Noel laid down is just right.

“Some Blues” is a nod to Jim Hall and Miles Davis. Miles wrote “All Blues” and I didn’t want to seem so presumptuous, so “Some Blues”. It’s a light, fun swinger in three quarter time. Kyle takes us to church on this one.

“Blues For Ted” is for my teacher and mentor, the late, great Ted Dunbar. It features some of the advanced harmony Ted shared with me, first in triads and then in fourths and a great light Afro-Latin groove by Noel.

The title track, “Blues From The Vault” was inspired by another great teacher of mine, master jazz guitarist Rodney Jones. Hopefully played with just the right amount of salt, butter and cholesterol this is a 60’s feeling soul jazz jam.

“New Orleans Guitar Funeral” is a dirge with a swinging 12/8 jazz ballad feel. An ode to a place I’ve never been, but will be someday. The band builds and builds on this one.

We close part one with “E.T.A” and we hope we’re on time. This number is for Bird, Dizzy and all the great purveyors of bebop jazz. Uptempo and playful.

We invite you to share these creative moments and hope you enjoy them.

about

Jim Josselyn Little Silver, New Jersey

On a family trip to Mexico at age 11 I got a guitar, a toy. It soon became my favorite toy and I haven't put it down since. I love many styles of music and love to create. Music of mine has been licensed to about 40 Tv shows, two commercials and two (awful) indie films.

I look forward to sharing a few of my things here and I hope you dig the sounds to come.
